MENTAL HEALTH CARER TRAINING
TRAINING RATIONALE
The Mental Health-Carer Training Model was designed to provide staff working with clients, up to date information about mental health and carer issues. The training was the first step towards providing Mental Health Carers with pathways to better support their health and wellbeing.
ABOUT THE TRAINING
To promote the importance of supporting carers, BCHS direct care staff participated in a series of compulsory training workshops to build knowledge around mental health and carer issues.
The training was delivered by Frances Saunders from ARAFEMI
TARGET AUDIENCE
All direct care staff
AIM
To provide staff with an overview of the issues and challenges for those who are caring for/living with a family member affected by mental illness
WORKSHOPS
Content of the worksops included the following:
· Brief overview of mental health
· Overview of a ‘carers’ role and responsibilities
· Impact on carers be they parents, partners, children, living with someone affected by mental illness
· Key issues for service providers in responding to the needs of carers/family members affected by mental illness
FOLLOWING THE TRAINING
The 'Carer Wellbeing Model' will provide carers will the opportunity to access wellbeing programs in a supportive environment as well as referring to appropiate services in the wider Bendigo community.
